Harpy

Ability Score Increases

Ability Score Increases are related to your character's background, rather than species.  When you select a background, increase your statistics using the background's three chosen ability scores. If the background does not have a listed set of ability scores, increase any one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.


Life Span

The typical life span of a player character in the is about a century, assuming the character doesn’t meet a violent end. Members of some species, such as nymphs and earth golems, can live for centuries. If typical members of a species can live longer than a century, that fact is mentioned in their description.


Languages

When creating your character, after selecting your class, species, and background, select your known languages.  Your character can speak, read, and write Common and two other standard languages. The Basic Rules offers a list of languages to choose from. The GM is free to modify that list for a campaign.

Taking glee in suffering and death, the sadistic harpy is always on the hunt for prey. Its sweet song has lured countless adventurers to their deaths, drawing them in close for the harpy to kill and then consume.


A harpy combines the body, legs, and wings of a vulture with the torso, arms, and head of a human. Its wicked talons and bone club make it a formidable threat in combat, and its eyes reflect the absolute evil of its soul.


Creature Type: Monstrosity

Size: Medium (about 4–7 feet tall) or Small (about 2–4 feet tall), chosen when you select this species

Speed: 30 feet


Flight

Due to of your wings, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can’t use this flying speed if you’re wearing medium or heavy armor.


Claws

You have claws that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.


Alluring Song

As an action you begin to sing a magical tune.  Every humanoid and giant within 30 feet of you that can hear the song must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, your choice when you select this species) or be charmed by you for the next minute, or until you stop singing.  You must take a bonus action on its subsequent turns to continue singing and you can stop singing at any time (no action required). The song also ends if you are incapacitated.   


While charmed by you, a target is incapacitated and ignores the songs of other harpies. If the charmed target is more than 5 feet away from you, the target must move on its turn toward you by the most safest, direct route, trying to get within 5 feet of you. It will not avoid opportunity attacks, but before moving into damaging terrain, such as lava or a pit, and whenever it takes damage from a source the target can repeat the saving throw. A charmed target can also repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If the saving throw is successful, the effect ends on it.


A target that successfully saves is immune to this harpy's song for the next 24 hours.


Once you have used this ability you cannot do so again until you have finished a short or long rest.

*When you take the Magic action, you cast a spell that has a casting time of an action or use a feature or magic item that requires a Magic action to be activated. If you cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 minute or longer, you must take the Magic action on each turn of that casting, and you must maintain Concentration while you do so. If your Concentration is broken, the spell fails, but you don’t expend a spell slot. See also “Concentration.”
