Ability Score Increases
Ability Score Increases are related to your character's background, rather than species. When you select a background, increase your statistics using the background's three chosen ability scores. If the background does not have a listed set of ability scores, increase any one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.
Life Span
The typical life span of a player character in the is about a century, assuming the character doesn’t meet a violent end. Members of some species, such as nymphs and earth golems, can live for centuries. If typical members of a species can live longer than a century, that fact is mentioned in their description.
Languages
When creating your character, after selecting your class, species, and background, select your known languages. Your character can speak, read, and write Common and two other standard languages. The Basic Rules offers a list of languages to choose from. The GM is free to modify that list for a campaign.
The Earth Golems were created as living weapons during a time known as The Ending War. They were created by the various species that created The Warlock Territories. They were bound to their masters at first, but nearing the end of the war, the golems developed sentience and overthrew their creators. It's currently unknown what caused this spark of life to ignite within them, whether it was one of The Sorcerers, or a defect that turned into a feature. Earth Golems are violent only when they need to be. They are at peace with nature and, gentle with those around them and exhibit kindness and mindfulness. All Earth Golems were created at once over 200 years ago and only recently began creating their own children. It is unknown how long they can live naturally though based on their form; it is believed to be upwards of thousands of years.
Creature Type: Humanoid and Construct
Size: Medium (about 7–9 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Powerfully Built
You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
War Machine
You were designed to be self-sufficient, and not require weapons or armor. Your form grants you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You can’t wear light, medium, or heavy armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal. Additionally, your stone-like fists amplify your unarmed strikes. When you make an unarmed strike, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier bludgeoning damage, instead of the damage normal for an unarmed strike.
One With Nature
Golems are made from and are attuned with nature. You gain proficiency in the Nature and Survival skills. In addition, you do not require food so long as you spend at least 1 hour outside during the day (regardless of weather conditions).
Photosynthesis
Earth Golems are made of earth, stone, and plant material and are adept at absorbing radiant energy. As a reaction, you can reduce the amount of incoming radiant damage by 1d12 plus your Constitution modifier. If the amount of damaged reduced is more than the damage received, you regain hit points equal to the difference.
You can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all expended uses at the end of a long rest.
*When you take the Magic action, you cast a spell that has a casting time of an action or use a feature or magic item that requires a Magic action to be activated. If you cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 minute or longer, you must take the Magic action on each turn of that casting, and you must maintain Concentration while you do so. If your Concentration is broken, the spell fails, but you don’t expend a spell slot. See also “Concentration.”
